The Jealous Muse explores the dynamics of artists’ relationships to their work and their immediate families. Through the life stories of nine major 20th century artists working in seven different artistic fields, The Jealous Muse presents versions of the interplay between family life and artistic creation. Nine internationally renowned artists — two women, three men, and two couples —are profiled in individual mini-biography chapters. The artists are: Anjelica Huston (acting), Edward Weston (photography), E. E. Cummings (literature), Maria Tallchief and George Balanchine (dance), Nina Simone (music), Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen (sculpture), and Henri Matisse (painting). Pittsburgh native Ian Johnson played high school basketball at the prestigious Oak Hill Academy alongside Carmelo Anthony, played four years of Division I basketball at Davidson College, and five years of professional basketball in Europe.
